JAGUAR 1 YEAR IN OFFICE

STAREHE CONSTITUENCY

It has been one year since the people of Starehe Constituency saw change of guard and mandated the young vibrant Hon. Jaguar to represent them as their Member of Parliament in the National Assembly. It is a task that he took with a lot of interest and energy and after his victory he pledged to serve the people with zeal and zest. And serve he did.

" It has been an explorative year with lots of lessons, challenges as well as achievements.
As a leader I have engaged myself in several projects, all for the benefit of the constituents."

1. Youth Empowerment

The youth believed in me and so have I. In 2017-2018, I managed to purchase several push carts, carwash machines for several youth groups within the constituency. Through this the youths are able to carry out different business activities which earn them a living leading to reduced crime levels and development of the community and the nation at large.

As you know the youth are such a good source of labor and have extra energy that if not well utilized it can lead to vices.

In conjunction with NG-CDF I have enrolled 150 youths for driving school as well as short courses that will empower them to get future opportunities.

I have partnered with industries within my constituency to provide jobs for the youths and this provides them with income as well as engaging them thus reducing crime rates.

2. Construction of roads
Roads are good for communication and transport and they are a booster to economic growth and Development. Most roads have been impassable for quite some time. Under my administration through KeRRA we have re-carpeted Tsunami road which is a major access road to Grogon area within the CBD.

Other roads that I have overseen their construction are Race-course and Mikonge road within Pangani ward.

Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) has also undertaken the maintenance of the following roads Chai road (Pangani), Tom Mboya Street , Luthuli Avenue, Parkroad, Kapiti road and Khoja Round about.

Plans are also underway by KURA to upgrade more than 30 roads within the constituency some of which include New Pumwani Road in Gikomba, Busia and Changamwe roads ( Landmawe) Desai (Ngara) , Hombe road (Pangani), Plainsview and Mwangeka Roads ( Nairobi South) , Tom Mboya and Kirinyaga Road (CBD).

3. Education

An English man once said, if you want to invest for tomorrow, invest in education.

Our schools have been struggling with several challenges among them lack of desks, dilapidated classrooms, inadequate wash rooms, land grabbing and encroachment as well as insecurity.

Through NG-CDF we have furnished the following schools with desks and chairs; Pumwani Primary, Riverbank Primary, Pumwani Boys Secondary, Mukuru Primary, St. Catherine Bakhita, Highway Secondary, Muslim Primary, Moi Avenue Primary and Our Lady of Mercy Primary Schools.

Also underway, is construction of a home-science complex for Pumwani Girls Secondary School, several ablution blocks and renovation works.

Some schools have been facing insecurity issues due to lack of perimeter walls. And cases of rampant grabbing of school land leaving the schools with no room for expansion. To mitigate this, we constructed perimeter walls for Mariakani Primary School in South B ward, Riverbank Primary School in Ngara Ward and plans are underway for the construction of the same for Dr. Ribeiro Boys Secondary School.

The walls will aid in curbing the drug abuse menace by restricting access of drugs and drug peddlers to the schools.

Jaguar Youth Empowerment Foundation in collaboration with the Lotto Foundation and Posta Kenya facilitated the renovation of Ainsworth Primary school which was one of the most dilapidated schools in Starehe Constituency.

The hall was not functional but after the refurbishment, it is now in use and the school is in good shape.

Due to financial challenges, some schools have been indebted to the point of almost having their properties auctioned.

I organized for a harambee which was graced by H.E the Deputy President, William Ruto to help offset the debts that had been incurred by Dr. Ribeiro Boys, Pumwani Girls Secondary School and County Girls Secondary School.

School infrastructure would achieve very little if there are no students in those institutions.

Parents struggle to keep their kids in school considering that the poverty levels are very high and parents struggle even to put food on the table.

To ensure that children attend and stay in school, I in collaboration in with NGCDF, issued bursaries to over 4,000 students in both secondary and tertiary institutions.

Some of these students have been put on full Scholarship by NG-CDF while the Jaguar Youth Empowerment Foundation finances their upkeep in school due to their level of need.

Through the JYEF in conjuction with the Friends With The Homeless Foundation, I have facilitated the rehabilitation of several street children within my area.

Some, after rehabilitation, have been taken through training in basic craft skills through our other partners ( Mariakani Training Institute). After the training, the trainees are empowered to start up their own businesses.

4. Medical Care
NHIF is a government medical insurance cover which provides medical cover to all its members and declared dependants.

Most of my constituents have been drawn from the informal sector and they did not understand the benefits of registering as members of NHIF.

I in collaboration with the Chipkeezy Foundation organized for a sensitization program and registered over 1000 members in to the medical scheme.

Diabetes has become a major challenge in the community and many people suffer due to lack of information. Thus, I also organised for a diabetes screening day where the constituents were screened.

This will remain an annual event under my leadership.

Jaguar Youth Empowerment Foundation (JYEF) in partnership with CURE Kenya, Sport Pesa  organized for a medical camp for the people who are abled differently.

5. Empowering women
Women Enterprise Fund is a revolving fund which aims at providing accessible and affordable credit to support women start their businesses.

I held a sensitization program for women within the constituency where I urged them to make use of these funds to enable them start up or expand already existing businesses for the purpose of wealth and employment creation.

“When you empower a woman you empower a family and a whole nation.”

6. Security
The Security sector has remained un-attended over time. The administration officers reside in very dilapidated structures and they face a lot of challenges among them washrooms and congestion in their areas of residence.

The NG-CDF Starehe is constructing housing units for our administration police officers in Kariokor. The officers have been living in make shift uni-huts. This will make them have proper living conditions and thus better services.

The Chiefs offices at Hazina Location in Nairobi South ward have been constructed.

Due to challenges of congestion, the officers have had challenges of bathrooms and washrooms. The Construction of an ablution block for administration police living in Ngara will go a long way in ensuring that the officers are comfortable.

Street lighting has been quite a challenge within the constituency.

I have followed up to make sure that all the street lights that were not functional are functioning now.

This goes a long way in reducing crime activities within the affected areas and some people are also able to extend their working hours as they feel safer.

Floodlights have been installed in Muthurwa, Ngara, Riverside Bridge, along Aoko road all the way to hazina estate in south b, Bellevue stage along mombasa road and CBD areas and this has gone a long way in ensuring that the vendors extend their working hours and therefore more sales and thus better lifestyle.

7. Environment
In tandem with the National Government initiative of  Penda Kenya, Panda Miti, I in conjunction with NG-CDF  ensured that trees have been planted within schools in the constituency.

Hon. Jaguar spearheading tree planting exercise in one of the schools within Starehe constituency

This program will be rolled over to schools to ensure that the City Constituency remains green and beautiful.

I have also engaged various youth groups and women groups in clean- up exercises and garbage collection which has proved to be a good source of income for them as well as ensuring that they live in a cleaner safer environment.

To ensure good working environment for our vendors, I have put up modern market shades at Ngara market and Kariokor market.

This, once complete will create an enabling environment for the traders to create wealth as well as for the buyers to feel secure when transacting.

8. Feeding Program
Knowing that most of the citizens in the informal sectors earn less than 1 dollar in a day which is hardly enough for them to sustain their daily needs, I organized for a feeding program where I together with various partners will be providing foodstuffs to my constituents in all the wards for the aged and the less fortunate.

8. Personal Interactions
I donated a generator to Danson Mwaniki who has been ailing for a while, experiencing breathing issues for a very long time and the sudden power outages interfere with his breathing system.

I have given startup capital to several youth groups as well as individuals. Several Women groups have also received cash to boost their table banking savings.

In times when fires have razed down homes and properties of my constituents, I have always come through for them and provided them with foodstuffs and beddings.

Through the JYEF, I have bought a bus which is a donation to the community to facilitate them during burials as well as community's special occasions.

9. SPORTS
NG-CDF organized a football tournament for the youth within the constituency. The tourney comprised 36 teams from the 6 wards and was won by Country bus Fc. The winners walked home with a cool 100,000ksh while the runners up and second runners up clinched 75,000ksh and 50,000ksh respectively.

Through JYEF I  have been able to support KOTHBIRO, Boxing and the recently concluded Mukuru Finest talent search.

Well, there you have it guys. Truth be told, It's been a rollercoaster year for the first time law maker who overcame great odds to clinch the capital's parliamentary seat and it hasnt been a walk  the park.

Good things seem to be on the horizon for the Starehe constituents and although the mp has done a handful, many more are waiting patiently in the que to get served. Kazi kwako mheshimiwa. Mbele iko sawa.

10M FOR DRAMA FESTIVALS

"We will use art to glorify hard work, family values, national cohesion and integration as well as respect for instituted authority - God, parents and Government."

Those remarks rang as wild fire when Kenya Film Classification Board C.E.O Dr Ezekiel Mutua gave his speech at Laico Recency Hotel during the signing of a memorandum of understanding between KFCB and the Kenya National Drama Festivals Organising Committee (MO).

The signing of the MOU makes KFCB the proud title sponsor for the 2019 Edition of the Kenya National Drama Festivals with a platinum cash sponsorship of Ksh10.8 Million and other forms of kind sponsorship that will take the total contribution of the Board to over Ksh20M by the time the finals are held mid next.

According to the CEO, the partnership seeks to identify and nurture talents through stage performances as well as to ensure that The identified talents is documented for future reference. He further stated that the board deems drama festivals as an important platform for inculcating positive social values in our youths at an early stage.

"Film and stage plays majorly mirror society and help to set the agenda for society by promoting values such as honesty, hard work, perseverance and resilience. Besides the agenda setting role, art is is a mirror of society and helps to promote development by glorifying good and shaming evil. Through art, our culture and beliefs are shaped and grown. Art therefore is a powerful tool for setting the agenda for society and can be used to deal with the social ills ailing us such as corruption, dishonesty, breakdown of our moral fabric and general lack of decency and fairness in our dealings. Art can be used to promote peace, love and unity and shame the growing culture of negative politics of ethnicity, hate and greed. Art can be used to mould  our young people into responsible adults. It can be used to pour scorn on the get- rich-quick schemes promoted by the media through misleading gambling and betting adverts as well as the culture of socialites, sponsors and sponsees that makes it cool for our young people to crave for the easy way out. Art can be used to redefine the misleading concept of success that glorifies acquisition of material possession through dubious means and short cut. Art can and should be used to portray a hard work and honesty as important values that define success in life." Mutua said

"In sporing the 2019 edition of the National Drama Festivals, KFCB seeks to have an interface with the most treasured segment of our  society, namely the young minds in our institutions of learning. The Board hopes to mould them into responsible adults who are prepared to deal with hard realities of life. The Board also hopes to identify and nurture talent. By working with the National Drama Festivals Committee, the Board hopes to document and keep track of the great talents that participate in the various activities beyond school. We do this is the full realization that many great talents who have won in various categories of these festivals in the past disappeared into the oblivion and the only memories of their stellar performance and talent is some trophy gathering dust in the school principal's office. We hope to change this narrative by creating a data bank of emerging talents and stars who can be nurtured into great creatives beyond school. We hope to create the necessary interlinkages between the National Drama Festivals and the creative industry for job creation and wealth for our youths. We will also seek to support the winners and the organizers with exposure by linking them with other institutions globally that have used drama to identify and nurture talent. By creating a structured partnership with the National Drama Festivals Organizing Committee, the Board hopes to turn these festivals into an avenue for job creation."  Added the CEO

Well for young and upcoming talents, this couldn't have come at a better time. This surely is a project worth a standing ovation and requires full support from all quarters. HEKO KFCB for this great endeavour that will surely shape the future of our country.

ZIFF2018

In the murky world of Kenyan creatives and film making, it's a Herculean task for young talented  but financially challenged film makers to produce and showcase their talents through films especially if the film makers come from the informal settlements.

According to recent report by United Nations; Human Development Index (HDI) 2017, Kenya recorded 39.1 percent unemployment rate and most of the unemployed youths come from the informal settlement.

It is this harsh reality  of life that has propelled young talented film makers from K-Youth Media to cast their net deeper into the unknown world of film making.

Meet MISFIT, a K- Youth media production that highlights the plight of a young man living with albinism in the Modern African society and just like the challenges depicted in the short poetical film, anyone involved in film making in Kenya will tell you how hard it is to produce a film especially if you don't have a dime.

Shockingly, Misfit was done on a 20 dollar budget. The director, Karanja Ng'endo and the main character, the reigning Mr. Albinism Kenya Jairus Ong'etta hooked up mysteriously and went down to Malindi and alas! MISFIT was shot. Just like that!. That speaks volumes about the potential and sacrifice that young aspiring film makers have and it came as reprieve when Kenya Film and Classification Board (KFCB) came to the rescue months later after the film was nominated for awards in the prestigious Zanzibar International Film Festivals (ZIFF) awards under the school category.

Four members of K youth Media were fully sponsored to attend the festivals in Zanzibar. Everything was carted for by the board.

"Under the leadership of Hon. DR Ezekiel Mutua, the CEO of KFCB, we the young aspiring film makers, might just have found a saviour and we are humbled that he has interest in young film makers like us. God bless KFCB." Joseph Muthee K-youth media

Mukuru news followed the unfoldings like a soap opera and true to the core, the film makers stay was pure experience to say the least.

"KFCB Corporate communications manager, Madam Nelly Muluka was vital and helpful in ensuring our stay in Zanzibar was smooth. She went out of her way to assist in every possible way, thanks a lot " Brian Obiri from K youth.

Kenya Film Classification Board sponsored 10 film makers to attend the awards and among them were students from Kenya Film school and the school's Deputy director Madam Victoria Goro literally  adopted the four film makers from k-youth media and the experience and knowledge they accumulated was exceptional.

Dr Ezekiel Mutua and his team at KFCB have given a glimpse of hope to the young film makers of this country that indeed, despite the challenges involved, there is light at the end of the tunnel and that KFCB will embrace lively positive ideas in film making. Sir, keep the door open for more film makers...

HON. JAGUAR'S SCORECARD

Barely 12 months since clinching the hotly contested Starehe parliamentary seat, Charles Njagua Kanyi (Jaguar) has been a beehive of activities.

Hon. Jaguar with the head of state His Excellency President Uhuru Kenyatta

From the flats of pangani and Kariakor
to the panya routes of Mukuru Kayaba, commercial and Tetra park , to the surburbs of south B down to Kanaro in Mariguini, kisii, Hazina, Maasai and Fuata Nyayo slums, all the way to the noisy and busy streets of Ngara, straight into the populous CBD, Jaguar's work is laid bare for all to see.

His mission, YOUTH EMPOWERMENT for a better Starehe.

Normally, when elections are dusted and done with, as it is the norm with our politicians, they go into a looting spree to recover monies dished out during the elections as we the electorates go back to our normal suffering and rather hard lives of inflated prices on basic commodities. Tunabaki tukisaga meno.

Jaguar however seems to be cut from a different cloth all together. His phone number has remained the same months after winning with a landslide and for those who know he isn't shy to pick up calls or reply to sms. Now that is a first.

In the heart of Starehe it's not business as usual and one will be forgiven to think that the campaigns are still on.

Last month alone the legislator was on the forefront to ensure that more than 1000 Starehe resident especially youths had access to quality  and affordable health care by sensitizing, mobilizing creating awareness and  paying for their NHIF CARDS. The event which was hosted at the Railway Training Institute was graced by Nairobi senator Johnson Sakaja and women Rep. Hon. Esther Passaris among other dignitaries who pledged to work with him in his endeavours.

“Led my constituents in mass registration for the NHIF health Insurance  Cover Scheme where I sponsored 1000 Starehe Constituents. The cover will go a long way in benefiting the Members and their Dependents access Quality Affordable Health Care in line with the Government's  *Big 4 Agenda* . Thanks @honsakaja @honpassaris @mcawaihinya @NHIFkenya for gracing the occasion. It was indeed  an honor.
It is our duty as leaders  to ensure Affordable Universal Health is achieved.” Jaguar wrote on Facebook.

In the same Month, the mp again was on the forefront to ensure that more than 120 youths across the constituency were enrolled in driving courses to better equip them in the job market and enhace their chances of securing a job. This however is not the first time the lawmaker has volunteered to pay for driving courses for youths in the area. During his short stint as director in NACADA, we are told that he paid for more than 500 young men to partake the course and most of them are now employed and earning decent living.

The women have not been left behind either as plans are underway to ensure that they have access to the women enterprise fund. Recently the mp called them to a meeting at Kariakor social hall and took them step by step on what was required to access the funds.

“Held a meeting with leaders of women groups from my constituency where we discussed about women empowerment and how to access funds from the National government. When u empower a woman, you empower the nation.” Jaguar

Football is a huge business and with the world cup frenzy catching up with everyone, business is booming and the youths saw an opportunity to reap in while supporting their favorite teams in Russia.

They made a courtesy call to Jaguar and requested DSTVS installations and he answered.

“We have installed four DSTVs in Nairobi South ward. One in Mariguini , Fuata Nyayo, Tumaini and kisii village. The youths requested for the DSTVs so that they can make something out of the world cup by charging a small fee while enjoying the matches in Russia.” Said Alex, Hon. Jaguar's representative in the area.
One of the DSTVs that is set to be installed in Mariguini social hall.
“We’ve also bought iron sheets to help this MUFYA, a group of youths in Fuata Nyayo build a social hall where they will air the matches live.” He added while handing the iron sheets to the group’s chairman Jackson Osore.

Alex Onkundi handing Iron sheets to MUFYA.

Other groups to benefit from the DSTV installations are Team Gaarang, and South B CBO Youth group.

Schools in Starehe have not been left in the cold either.

“In collaboration with NG-CDF Starehe, I presented Lockers and Chairs to students  of; St Catherine's Primary, Our Lady of Mercy Primary, Mukuru Primary and Highway Secondary School.
The fund aims at supporting the Education system of all public schools within the constituency.
An investment in Education pays the best interest.” Jaguar

Small scale traders in fig tree market in Ngara whose future looked bleak due to unconducive working environment can now laugh all the way to the market and bank after Jaguar constructed modern shades to help prevent unfavorable weather conditions that would hinder their operations.

Roads that had been depleted by rains in the constituency in recent past have since been rehabilitated under Jaguar's watch.

The first phase of bursary disbursement has been done and dusted and the exercise was done in a free, fair and transparent manner under the watchful eye of the first time lawmaker.

3500 residents are beneficiaries and 15 bright but very needy students have since been put on full scholarship.

All these in just under 12 months is a huge step in the right direction. Well, you know what they say, Action speaks louder.Keep on keeping on mheshimiwa Mbele iko sawa.
