Fire struck once again in the over-populated slum of Mukuru
Kayaba on Sunday 3rd June 2012.
The fire, which according to eye-witnesses was caused by an
electrical fault, started at around 9 am.
“There was no
electricity and when it came back fire erupted from one of the houses, “stated Mrs.
Helen Ongachi, one of the victims.
Over 65 houses were destroyed and more than 200 families
left homeless.
A 3 year old child died in the Sunday morning inferno.
It is alleged that the mother of the child had it alone in
the house and gone to fetch water in a nearby communal tap.
The fire brigades efforts were
fruitless as they could not penetrate through the closely built structures.
Cases of fire in Mukuru slums are
not new as they keep recurring. What is the government doing to solve this
issue?
